What is TOPIX?
TOPIX (Tokyo Stock Price Index) is a stock market index calculated from stocks listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange that meet certain criteria. Published by the Tokyo Stock Exchange itself, it stands alongside the Nikkei 225 as one of Japan's two most representative stock market indices.
The key distinguishing feature of TOPIX is that it uses a "market capitalization-weighted" calculation method. While the Nikkei 225 is heavily influenced by high-priced stocks, TOPIX is influenced by companies with large market capitalizations (stock price multiplied by shares outstanding), making it a more accurate reflection of overall market movements.
Key Concepts of TOPIX
How TOPIX Is Calculated
TOPIX uses the total market capitalization on January 4, 1968, as a base value of 100 points and shows how many times the current total market capitalization has grown since then. For example, a TOPIX level of 2,500 means the total market capitalization is 25 times what it was in 1968.
The calculation is:
TOPIX = Total Market Cap of Constituent Stocks / Base Market Cap x 100
TOPIX vs. Nikkei 225: When to Use Each
- TOPIX: Covers approximately 1,700 stocks, making it ideal for understanding overall market movements. Widely used as a benchmark by institutional investors
- Nikkei 225: Limited to 225 stocks but enjoys higher recognition among retail investors and in news media. Better for quick market snapshots
Monitoring both provides a more accurate picture of the market.
Constituent Review
Following the TSE market segment restructuring in April 2022, TOPIX constituents are being gradually reviewed:
- Markets were reorganized into three segments: Prime, Standard, and Growth
- Phase 1 (completed): Approximately 400 stocks that did not meet the free-float market capitalization threshold were removed at the end of January 2025, reducing constituents to approximately 1,700
- Phase 2 (planned): Further reviews will be conducted in stages from October 2026 through July 2028
Key Points for Beginners
- TOPIX is the index that most accurately captures overall market trends. Check it alongside the Nikkei 225
- Index funds and ETFs tracking TOPIX provide diversified exposure to the entire Japanese stock market, making them ideal for beginning investors
- If the Nikkei 225 is rising but TOPIX is falling, it may indicate that only a few high-priced stocks are driving gains while the broader market is weak
- Most institutional investors, including pension funds, use TOPIX as their benchmark for portfolio performance
Summary
TOPIX is a market capitalization-weighted index covering approximately 1,700 stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, making it the most accurate indicator of Japan's overall stock market movements. While the Nikkei 225 as a price-weighted index is influenced by high-priced stocks, TOPIX captures the market as a whole on a market-cap basis. By monitoring both indices together, investors can develop a deeper understanding of the Japanese stock market.
